I often speculated what was behind the shutters of the old Bayson house. The last Bayson died when I was just a tyke. It had lain empty for many years but recently there was a flurry of activity as workmen carted lumber-old out, new in and up the 20 steps.
Would it be a family? Would there be kids sliding down the handrail and climbing the walnut tree on a summer morn?
Or maybe a collective of artists, all clamoring for the good light the two story windows had to offer.
As I walked past it, I noticed one of the basement windows was broken. The jagged edge would seem to discourage anything larger than a cat or squirrel from entering
My wondering came to an end suddenly one evening as I watched the flames lick the broken window and climb up the stairs as I had hoped people would some day. Now I speculate on what will rise out of the ashes.

Wow, Copper Penny, powerful writing. I like how you told this story in a straight-forward manner with tantalizing detail: the lumber, “kids sliding down the handrail and climbing the walnut tree on a summer morn?” Yes, perfect! I can see these children. I can feel the anticipation and excitement of the child fantasizing about potential future playmates. Or maybe artists. . . exotic, flamboyant artists! Excitement builds and then . . . the “jagged edge.” Uh-oh, foreshadowing trouble? Tension builds. Your last paragraph is perfect! You quickly wrap up, as swiftly as the fire inspires new speculation. Well done. Thanks for posting and providing entertainment and a satisfying read!
