Hear the writer\u2019s voice on the page.<\/em><\/a><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Never Should You Ever<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By Ken Delpit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNever would I ever,\u201d<br>Or \u201cNever will I ever,\u201d<br>Or \u201cNever could I ever,\u201d<br>Or \u201cNever can I ever,\u201d<br>Or \u201cNever should I ever,\u201d<br>Or \u201cNever have I ever,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot help but marvel<br>At what an eternity \u201cNever\u201d is.<br>At what a commitment \u201cNever\u201d is.<br>At what a delusion \u201cNever\u201d is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few such utterances can hold true,<br>When a single exception renders them moot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most such utterances harbor doubts.<br>We just cannot help ourselves in our passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who among us say these things?<br>Why, everyone, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who among us mean these things?<br>Well, everyone, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But who among us are truthful about \u201cNevers\u201d?<br>Well, some of us are\u2026<br>Or, intend to be, at least,<br>At the time, that is,<br>For the most part, anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, take heed at the notion of \u201cNever.\u201d<br>Its purpose is rigid,<br>But its use is fluid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lest you think \u201cNever\u201d always means forever,<br>Never should you ever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ken Delpit,<\/strong> in moments of introspection, grapples with intentions versus realities. \u201cNevers\u201d and \u201cAlwayses,\u201d generally well-meaning pronouncements, are sly co-conspirators in life. They come in lots of flavors. They come in myriad weights. They come with varying degrees of truth\u2026, or not. They can be purveyors of principle, and they can be agents of deception, including of self.
