Night Knight<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spend almost every night together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m not away from home often<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when I am, I ache<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I don\u2019t sleep well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am uncomfortable with<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hardness of strangers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impersonal coarseness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or aloof purist sterility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is never the welcoming<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I get at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The soft embrace,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At home there is no judgment<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or pressure that I am not doing enough,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No criticism that I am not enough<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My bed cradles me like a mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am held in a cocoon of love<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I never want to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I close my eyes and my bed hums<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A silent lullaby<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Sleep dear one<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Tired caterpillar<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Your work will wait<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Dream of wings<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          And drinking flowers<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Wake up the butterfly<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That you are.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Su Shafer<\/strong> is a creative crafter, fabricating bits of writing in poetry and short stories, and other bits into characters that appear in paintings or sit on various bookshelves and coffee tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She lives in a cottage on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington, where the tea kettle is always whistling and the biscuits freshly baked. One never knows who might stop by to share a rainy afternoon. And all are welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
