Going through an old (paper) file folder, I found something I wrote around 2011:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am passionate about writing. It is my joy to find the exact right word for what I\u2019m looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some people work crossword puzzles for a hobby. If there was such a hobby for finding precise words, that\u2019s what I would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, it is what I do!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grant Faulkner also appreciates discovering the right word, as described in his Substack essay, \u201cA Grab Bag of Trinkets, Flotsam, Jetsam, Doo Dads, Dad Doos, Rusty Objects, Found Objects, Attempts at Erudition\u2014and More (but not less)<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWords have halos, patinas, overhangs, echoes.\u201d \u2014Donald Barthelme<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI steal \u201cfrotteur\u201d from James Salter, who said, \u201cI’m a frotteur<\/em>, someone who likes to rub words in his hand, to turn them around and feel them, to wonder if that really is the best word possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a frotteur<\/em> of words, I love this quote, because a word is never a definite thing. A word holds textures and nuances and surprises. It\u2019s erotic, shape-shifting, enticing, and elusive.\u201d \u2014 Grant Faulkner<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to me: Yes! Simply yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
