Writer\u2019s Digest, July\/August 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go outside with pen and notebook, get settled, observe, use sensory detail to enhance your writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bengtson suggests using these prompts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I notice . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wonder . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It reminds me of . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour observations will create a reference that will help you transport your reader from their cozy chair to the world on your pages. Sketch a tree or flower or a critter you see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work of creating a rough map, schematic, or stick-figure diagram forces you to think about how things are related to one another, and how the environment and the things in it are structured.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For example: Dave Seter\u2019s poem, \u201cFox Trot.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A curtain parted, beaded, of mustard grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fox made an entrance and trotted across<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>an asphalt stage, expanse of empty parking spaces<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>stained with motor oil. Without missing a step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audience was wind, full of bluster,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>phrased with pollen mitigated by a whisper<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>of unseen lilac. But the fox was seen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>despite having gotten scent, or sixth sense,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>college was closed, cars and people absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fox\u2019s coat was the color of caramelized sugar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\/she\/they paused like a debutante waiting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to be conferred royal title, the applause of a suitor,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>but it was my nose that was in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My heart on my sleeve hid a heart tattoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is happiness, I asked, what sweetness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>has been missing? But the fox didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did the fox want to be seen frozen,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>skilled as lawn statuary unmoved by wind?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or did the fox just not want to give audience<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>dancing in a coat the color of caramelized sugar?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/daveseter.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/daveseter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dave Seter<\/a>, civil\/environmental engineer, poet, and essayist is the Sonoma County Poet Laureate for 2024-2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is the author of&nbsp;<em>Don\u2019t Sing to Me of Electric Fences<\/em>&nbsp;(Cherry Grove Collections, 2021) and&nbsp;<em>Night Duty<\/em>&nbsp;(Main Street Rag, 2010).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He writes about social and environmental issues, including the intersection of the built world and the natural world.
