It&#8217;s a very simple concept, made difficult by the many choice of who gets to tell the story: first person, second person, third person (limited, close, omniscient).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another point of view choice: The Free Indirect Style.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m posting about the free indirect style of point of view because I&#8217;m fascinated with learning new things and also because a friend, whom I admire and is an excellent writer said, &#8220;I have found that I use it [free indirect point of view] a lot in my writing, and always have, without even knowing that&#8217;s what it was. \u00a0It&#8217;s a very &#8220;natural&#8221; voice for me and, I think, one that&#8217;s easy to read.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ready? Here we go:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Free indirect speech<\/strong> is a style of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Third-person_narrative\" target=\"_blank\">third-person narration<\/a> which uses some of the characteristics of third-person along with the essence of first-person direct speech.&#8221;\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_indirect_speech\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are two kinds of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">indirect<\/span> speech:\u00a0 free and normal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What distinguishes free indirect speech from normal indirect speech is the lack of an introductory expression such as &#8216;He said&#8217; or &#8216;he thought&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Free indirect discourse can also be described as a &#8216;technique of presenting a character&#8217;s voice partly mediated by the voice of the author, or, in the words of the French narrative theorist Gerard Genette, &#8216;the narrator takes on the speech of the character, or, if one prefers, the character speaks through the voice of the narrator, and the two instances then are <em>merged<\/em>.&#8217; Randall Stevenson, <em>Modernist Fiction<\/em>.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_indirect_speech\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Examples\u00a0 (Wikipedia):<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quoted<\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Direct_speech\" target=\"_blank\">direct speech<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>He laid down his bundle and thought of his misfortune. &#8220;And just what pleasure have I found, since I came into this world?&#8221; he asked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Normal<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indirect_speech\" target=\"_blank\">indirect speech<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>He laid down his bundle and thought of his misfortune. Mine is!<\/p>\n<p>Reading examples of the free indirect style of pov might help:<\/p>\n<p>Jane Austen was one of the first practitioners of free indirect speech with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasna.org\/persuasions\/printed\/number13\/flavin.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Emma.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Irish author <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Joyce\" target=\"_blank\">James Joyce<\/a> also used free indirect speech in works such as &#8220;The Dead&#8221; (see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dubliners\" target=\"_blank\">Dubliners<\/a><\/em>), <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Portrait_of_the_Artist_as_a_Young_Man\" target=\"_blank\">A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man<\/a><\/em>, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ulysses_%28novel%29\" target=\"_blank\">Ulysses<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_indirect_speech#cite_note-2\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No matter what point of view you choose. . . just write!<\/p>\n<p>The Write Spot Blog is part of the Festive Spirit Blog Hop, hosted by Francis H.
