The story takes place during a woman\u2019s travels to\nmeet her sister and mother. We learn what happened thirty-five years prior\nthrough flashbacks while the woman travels in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other examples of using flashback to tell a story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em>:\nThe whole story\nis a flashback told by Scout a few years after the scenes take place. The first\nsentence of the book indicates the timeframe. &#8220;When he was nearly\nthirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Saving Private Ryan<\/em>: The movie starts out with an elderly man walking in a cemetery in Normandy. He then has a flashback of WWII. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Titanic <\/em>is told from an elderly lady&#8217;s point of view. We move from present time of her telling the story and the resurrection of the ship to what happened years previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think for a moment about a movie or story you have read\nwhere flashbacks are used to tell a story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to\nincorporate flashbacks into your writing: Use past tense. \u201cShe revealed\n. . .\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cWe had just gone to . . .\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prompt:<\/strong> What is the\nmost fearless thing you have done?&nbsp; But .\n. . here&#8217;s the twist. . . start your story in the present time period. Then, go\nback in time to tell what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: Today, I&#8217;m afraid of\nspiders because of the time . . .&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OR:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know I can accomplish such and\nsuch because when I was . . . &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go for it!
