When I started writing\nfiction seriously, I kept trying to get it right the first time. Over time, as\nI got rougher with my first drafts, my finished work got better and better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does a coherent first draft give birth to a stilted\nfinished product? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it means you haven&#8217;t let it flow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You haven&#8217;t given yourself permission to make mistakes\nbecause you haven&#8217;t forgiven yourself for past ones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Admit it: Unless your throttle&#8217;s wide open, you&#8217;re not\ngiving it everything you&#8217;ve got.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Creativity in writing isn&#8217;t a linear process<\/strong>, even\nthough we read in a linear fashion and the words must go on the page one after\nthe other; even though we must put our thoughts and words in order so the\nreader can make sense of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing, in fact, is the only art that is literally\none-dimensional. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can be gut-level honest with yourself, you&#8217;ve really\ngot a shot at your readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;And the only way to\nfind that honesty is to not overthink it.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider your pen your paintbrush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For your writing to come alive &#8212; to be multi-dimensional\n&#8212; you must barter away some control. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rewards are worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritespot.us\/marlenecullenblog\/?cat=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Prompts to inspire writing.
