“Jump in,” my cousin called to me from the center of the community pool, in her hometown of Mill Valley.

So I jumped in. Into 12 feet of water. And I didn’t know how to swim. I don’t know why I jumped. Did I think once I hit the water I would magically know how to do the crawl or sidestroke? Or any kind of swimming?

I sank to the bottom. Water swirled around me. Arms flailing, legs frantically moving, I made it to the top. Above water, I gasped and managed to get to the side of the pool. I hung onto the edge and looked around. Kids playing, laughing, splashing, unaware that I almost died.
