Years ago, BK (Before Kids), my husband and I spent a winter weekend in South Lake Tahoe. Jim won $800 at a slot machine. We headed to our hotel around midnight.

To get to our hotel, we had to walk across a huge, empty, dark, parking lot. No lights, no starry sky, that wintry night.

Our brisk walk was interrupted by the sound of footsteps behind us.

The footsteps got louder and faster.

I clutched Jim’s arm and we walked faster.

The closer the footsteps, the faster they got.

A man’s low slung voice shot through the air, “So, you won pretty big tonight.”

It was a statement. Not a question. He knew about our $800.

My heart beat faster. I held my breath, expecting my life to end any moment.

Then, he quickly passed us and kept walking.

As he disappeared into the dark and the echo of his footsteps faded, I filled my lungs with air, grateful to angels who watched over us.
