I was born in Santa Barbara, CA., which I consider the reason for my passion for the Sea. I have never felt as at home as I feel when I am anywhere near any sea. I ache to once again be hearing the symphony played by waves during a rainstorm, such as I witnessed when staying at a friend’s house at Stinson Beach during the mid 80’s. I so wish I could go back to that place. A home that was built sometime in the 20’s, painted pink and red on the outside, completed with purple ceilings, and purple Melmac table settings.

The windows were antique glass that caused things seen through them to appear as wavy, appropriate for a home by the sea. The windows surrounding the main living room window were diamond shaped in the centers, and varied in gem-like colors of lavender, pink and green.

The house was up on a very steep hill two blocks up from Highway 1. It was certainly a true challenge to walk up after returning from a walk or long lazy afternoon on the beach.

I especially loved bringing my 2 sons, then 6 & 7 1/2 years of age, with me to spend a weekend, and even an occasional 7 days. Together, they spent hours at play on the sand, dodging waves, to then dive into the next larger waves to swim and cavort.

I was seldom without my camera, and my most favorite photos of them hang in my stairwell at my home in Cotati, CA. I have so often paused to reflect on the beauty of their images, captured in mid-cavort. It brings to mind why Renaissance artists often chose young boys as their sculpture subjects.

“Mid-cavort”… gotta love it. You pause on the stairs to reflect, and with detailed descriptive words take the reader along with you. Noticing the vivid colors enhances the richness of the setting and indicate a playful mood. It might be time to go on VRBO and rent a Stinson Beach house for a week; sounds like it”s an inspiring place to put pen to paper— finger to keys. Memories and Melmac are indestructible.

Kathy: Thank You! I would love to rent a Stinson Beach House as writing 3-day weakend, though I would have to wait until Early December – let me know what the group thinks. Justine
