Jumpstart

Jumpstart Overview

We use a variety of prompts to spark writing—sometimes a word, a phrase, or a poem.

There are usually three prompts in each workshop. We write for 15–20 minutes on each prompt.

After writing, participants choose one freewrite to read aloud, enriching the experience.

Responses from listeners focus on what we like, what stands out and what is memorable about the writing.

There is no judging, no critiquing, and no questions for clarification.

This kind of freewriting is for ourselves—not necessarily for an audience.

Jumpstart meets on the Zoom platform.

Making The Most Of Your Jumpstart Experience

First Part of Jumpstart: Writing

Relax into your chair. Escort your inner critic out the door.

There is no such thing as “perfect writing” in Jumpstart.

This is the place to write whatever is on your mind.

Your writing doesn’t have to make sense.

Keep your pen moving.

See your story and tell it.

If you run out of ideas, or don’t want to write on the

prompt, you can respond to:

I remember. . .
I don’t remember. . .
What I really want to say . . .

Know yourself better – Just Write

Second Part of Jumpstart: Reading and Responding

Read one freewrite aloud, enhancing your writing experience.

Responding during the readings: Mention what is notable about the writing.

There is no judging, no critiquing, no questions asked for clarification with this type of freewriting,

We are writing for ourselves, not for an audience.
